Explore the Eifel area

Distance from base: 70-120 km

You are currently living in Germany in an area called “Eifel’. The Eifel lies between the cities of Aachen to the north, Trier to the south and Koblenz to the east. It descends in the northeast along a line from Aachen via Düren to Bonn into the Lower Rhine Bay. In the east and south it is bounded by the valleys of the Rhine and the Moselle. To the west it transitions in Belgium and Luxembourg into the geologically related Ardennes and the Luxembourg Ösling. The Eifel covers an area of 5,300 km² and is geographically divided into the North and South Eifel. It is further divided into several natural regional landscapes, some with further subdivisions. Its highest point is the volcanic cone of the Hohe Acht (746.9 m).

Below you can check out the tours which we offer by clicking on the + symbol.

Tour 1 (orange): Moated Castle and picturesque town

Start the day off at the beautiful moated castle Satzvey. A guide will show you the castle and after the tour you may walk around the castle grounds and grab lunch. In the afternoon we will visit a lovely town full of half timbered houses. You can spend your free time there walking around picturesque streets with a flyer for orientation, walk up to the castle or check out some of the outlet shops. Finally you will visit a big radio telescope. Depending on COVID-19 restrictions you may or may not be able to go inside this magnificent radio telescope. Worldwide there are only two of this kind.

Tour 2 (pink): WWII side & game reserve

Today you will get to see the big water reservoir of the Urft river. After a peak at the reservoir, we will head towards Vogelsang. This is a former Nazi military training ground which is now part of the Eifel Nationalpark. After a guided tour through the remains of the military history, you may grab some lunch and/or explore a bit by yourself. Refreshed we will visit a wildlife park where you may get to see a flight show with birds of prey.

Tour 3 (light green): Visit 2 beautiful halftimbered villages & a monastery

First we will drive to Monschau, a beautiful village full of half timbered houses which are built along the stream. After a guided citytour we will stop at a small museum which displays how people lived in the 18th and 19th century. Now you have some time to explore the little town by yourself and grab some lunch in one of the restaurants before we will depart towards the monastery established in 1070. After a short tour of the basilica you may want to stop at the little shop for a cup of coffee and a pastry. Before heading back to Spangdahlem we will have a final stop in the small town called Kronenburg near a big lake. Explore the narrow streets on your own.

Tour 4 (dark green): historical water mill & game reserve

Start the day at the historical water mill which powers the sawmill which still saws wood. There is also a grain mill which shows how grain turns into flour. Nearby is an old stone backing oven where they bake delicious bread which can be purchased. At the mustard mill you will learn everything about the production of the "Eifeler Mühlensenf" (Eifeler mill mustard).
In the afternoon we will have a stop at the Gerolsteiner spring where you learn everything about the production of the local spring before finishing the day off at a game reserve. Maybe you will get to see the flight show and the feeding of the wolves.

Tour 5 (dark blue): Open Air Museum

An open-air museum (or open air museum) is a museum that exhibits collections of buildings and artifacts outdoors. It is also frequently known as a museum of buildings or a folk museum.

Living-history museums, including living-farm museums and living museums, are open-air museums where costumed interpreters portray period life in an earlier era. The interpreters act as if they are living in a different time and place and perform everyday household tasks, crafts, and occupations. The goal is to demonstrate older lifestyles and pursuits to modern audiences. Household tasks might include cooking on an open hearthchurning butterspinning wool and weaving, and farming without modern equipment. Many living museums feature traditional craftsmen at work, such as a blacksmithpewtersmithsilversmithweavertannerarmorercooperpottermillersawyercabinet-makerwoodcarverprinter, doctor, and general storekeeper.

Tour 6 (light blue): Racing Museum, 40-50s museum & Brewery

Travel back in time to the 40s & 50s in a small museum on our way to the famous Nürburgring. There you can spend your time at the museum and shops and find your lunch. In the afternoon we will have a Foto stop at a giant bench before reaching our final destination; the brewery in Mendig.

Tour 7 (red): Vulcanic Adventure

In the morning we will drive to a museum from where we will take a boat to the half island where the geyser is located. After you saw the geyser in action, we will take the boat back to the museum and have lunch at a brewery. Refreshed we will visit a vulcano museum where you will learn all about the geology of this region. In the late afternoon we will arrive at a beautiful castle Bürresheim. After a short tour through the castle we will drive to Mayen where you can roam the streets and/or get dinner before we head back home.
