Distance from base: 350 km
The Black Forest (German: Schwarzwald) is a large, forested mountain range in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg in southwest Germany. It is bounded by the Rhine valley to the west and south. It's highest peak is the Feldberg with an elevation of 1,493 metres (4,898 ft) above sea level. The region is roughly oblong in shape, with a length of 160 kilometres (100 miles) and breadth of up to 50 km (30mi).
Historically, the area was known for ore deposits, which led to mining featuring heavily in the local economy. In recent years, tourism has became the primary industry.
The region is known for many beautiful hiking trails and breathtaking lakes such as the Titisee and Schluchsee.
You may want to visit Baden-Baden with ist thermal baths or picuresque old towns such as Altensteig, Dornstetten, Freiburg im Breisgau and Gernsbach. Other tourist attractions are the Triberg Waterfalls, and the Open Air Museum at Vogtsbauernhof.
Below you can check out the tours which we offer by clicking on the + symbol.
Our first stop will be Triberg, where we will visit Germanys highest waterfalls. The steady light noise of the waterfalls is part of Triberg. Foaming and roaring the water plunges 163 metres down the river called Gutach. After this breathtaking view of the waterfalls, we will have a short stop at a cuckoo clock shop before you have free time to get lunch and explore Triberg.
For those who are looking for a taste of the Black Forest I can highly recommend to try some of the Triberger Fichtenschinken, Tribergs version of the famous Black Forest ham. As for a sweet dessert, you may want to have a piece of the delicious Black Forest Cake.
Before we will head back towards Spangdahlem we will have one last stop at an amazing Open Air Museum. Here you can see how people used to live in the Black Forest region and you may even meet people in their traditional customs going about daily tasks of old times to demonstrate how life has been in the past.
In addition there will be a handcraft demonstration about how to build a traditional Black Forest Hat.
