Heidelberg the “young-old” City
We depart the Eifel in the morning and head to Heidelberg with its history from the earliest inhabitants over 550,000 years ago up to today. This history covers many wars and many more ruling Prince Electors as well as the growth of the city from a small fortress to the city of today.
Once we arrive, we will meet our guide for the city and castle tour. The combined old town and castle tour brings history to life. With a tour through the winding alleys of the old town you can get to know the many different faces of Heidelberg – dreamy squares, the oldest university in Germany, the Church of the Holy Spirit and the Jewish Quarter. And then it’s up to the castle with the funicular railway. In a tour around the inner courtyard and the castle garden you can discover the electoral residence ruins and visit the famous giant barrel. After the guided tour the rest of the day is free for you to explore the romantic city of Heidelberg on your own. Heidelberg has the longest pedestrian zone in Europe – sure you will find nice places to eat drink and shop. After a full day of sightseeing and shopping we will depart for home in the early evening.
