Enter the Roman fort through the Porta Praetoria like many Roman soldiers did in the past.
The fort which was rebuilt more than 100 years ago is located on the Saalburg Pass in the Taunus Mountains. With its crenellated walls, it watched over the former frontier of the Roman Empire, the Limes. Surrounded by the ruins of a Roman village with temples shaded by ancient trees, the Saalburg evokes the atmosphere of an archaeological landscape park.
On 160 acres the Open Air Museum Hessenpark has more then 100 buildings from the past and brings 400 years of history to life. Most of the buildings have been reconstructed using the original materials from the relevant period in history.
The special thing about an Open Air Museum is this: the exhibits are houses, workshops, trees, fields and even live animals. So instead of reading in dusty books the visitor can plunge into history and experiences the old life style first-hand through theatrical tours and workshops, and by exploring gardens, barns and kitchens or by dining in a historical tavern. It is the perfect day trip destination for the whole family.
