    The Eagles Nest

    History with a View

The Eagles Nest

Distance from base: 715 km

The Eagle's Nest today - a legacy of recent history
As a symbol of power of NS regime. It still stands for the insanity of the regime where plans for war and mass murder were formed.
In defiance, the building stand perched over a sheer rock wall. A road was cut into the mountain though previously impassable terrain. Although it is an architectural master piece, it was still an act of waste on nature and other resources. To reach it, there is a golden brass elevator buried in the heart of the mountain. Today the Eagle´s Nest is a restaurant which is open to the general public.

Berchtesgaden - residence of the Kings
Historical town center and shopping experience.
First the Bavarian Kings spend their summers here, later the scholars, industrialists and artists. They all recognized the special flair of Berchtesgaden at the foot of the "Watzmann" Mountain. It is the blend of culture and nature of Berchtesgaden, which attracts people from all over the world. From a small settlement, the Augustinian monastery founded in 1102, the smallest Principality in Germany. Over the centuries, the dispute over the "White Gold" (salt mines) of Berchtesgaden smoldered between Bavaria and Salzburg. Who would like to learn more about the "White Gold", can move with the tramway on the traces of the miners and enter 180 meters below the Earth. More insights onto the history, art and traditions allows the Collegiate Church, the Royal Palace, the museum "Schloss Adelsheim" and the pilgrimage church "Maria Gern". The historical market place with its lovely shops and cafes is definitely worth a visit
