Vianden Castle
Was constructed between the 11th and 14th centuries on the foundation of a Roman “castellum” (castellan) and a Carolingian refuge. It is one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the Romanesque and gothic periods in Europe. Until the beginning of the 15th century it was the seat of the influential counts of Vianden who could boat their close connections to the Royal Family of France and the German imperial court.
1977 the castle was restored to its former glory, it now ranks as a monument of not only regional, but European importance.
The day will start with a guided tour at the beautiful Vianden Castle. After the tour you have some time to explore the castle grounds by yourself and spend some time for lunch in the nearby village Vianden.
In the afternoon we will drive to the American Cemetery in Luxembourg.
Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial is a Second World War American military war grave cemetery, located in Hamm, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg. The cemetery was established on December 29, 1944 by the 609th Quartermaster Company of the U.S. Third Army while Allied Forces were stemming the enemy's desperate Ardennes Offensive, one of the critical battles of World War II.
It is administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission.
The cemetery consists of 17 acres of manicured lawn surrounded by 33.5 acres of woods and contains 5,070 American war dead.
Entering through the gates, you will see the impressive Memorial Chapel and two huge pylons facing each other. Those pylons display the battle movements in the western European Operations (on the right) and those related to the Battle of the Bulge (on the left). On the reverse of the maps, 371 names of those missing in action are inscribed. Twenty-three bronze rosettes identify service members who have been recovered since the inscriptions were made and now rest in known graves.
The city of Luxembourg served as headquarters for General George S. Patton's U.S. Third Army and the cemetery is his final resting place.
